Masseria Battifarano has belonged to the family Battifarano for over five centuries, across 17 generations and is currently managed by the second generation of Agronomists, Francesco Battifarano, son of Vincenzo. We are in Basilicata, in Southern Italy, and we produce Matera DOC wines, based on Primitivo and Greco Bianco grape varieties.
CANTINA DI BARILE-CONSORZIO VITICOLTORI ASSOCIATI DEL VULTURE SOC. COOP. ARL.
In the northern part of Lucania, around Mount Vulture, an ancient dormant volcano, the growing of the Aglianico grape variety has a centennial history, since it was introduced in the territory by the ancient Greeks.
The Aglianico del Vulture, gem of the southern oenology, boasts distinguished tasters, such as the Lucanian latin poet Horace, the historian Pliny the Elder and Charles of Anjo, the latter even ordered, in a letter, to have “400 loads” of the good wine of the Vulture hills served. Among breathless landscapes, sprinkled with castles and manors, which narrate about the passage of the Swabian Emperor Frederick the second, whose memory still fills the air during the local falconry hunting, lies the town of Barile, with its famous cellars dug deep into the tuff, considered the symbol and center of an area which has always kept high the level of its oenological-gastronomical traditions
Cantine del Notaio, in the green heart of Basilicata, has been dedicating its commitment to explore all the potential of Aglianico del Vulture making a great research on this hindigenous variety grape that groves here at its best thanks to a combination of temperatures (a big difference in degrees during summer season between the day and the night and very high temperatures due to hot air coming from Africa), lack of rain (no rainfall for 2 months in summer season), a good exposition of the vineyards and the rich volcanic soil.
